Rasch analysis in developing a questionnaire to measure self-efficacy beliefs of Omani preservice science teachers for teaching through engineering design

Abstract This research focuses on the recent efforts to improve STEM skills among future science educators in Oman. It details the development and application of a questionnaire aimed at evaluating self-efficacy in teaching science through engineering design. A survey was given to 326 aspiring science teachers to gauge their views on incorporating engineering design in science education. A quantitative methodology was used, with Rasch analysis used in the analysis of the survey instrument. The survey revealed two distinct dimensions: Personal Self-efficacy (SE) and Outcome Expectancy (OE). The reliability of person and item measures fell within acceptable limits. The analysis of the category probability curves showed effective rating scale measurements. The Wright map corresponded well with theoretical predictions, offering insightful implications for training science teachers in Oman. This research adds to the existing body of knowledge, particularly in Arab regions, by providing data on science education from Omani preservice science teachers. It further explores how these findings can enhance the quality of science teaching and learning.
