Migrant women are increasingly visible as a category in public discourse and European policies due to an increase in female migration and the obligation on European institutions to introduce a gender perspective in all policies. However, EU law does not recognise the specific needs and experiences of migrant women. Despite the diversity of female migration, the dominant perception of migrant women in Europe remains low qualified and dependent women needing protection. The purpose of this article is to show how European law on migration and asylum, although supposedly gender-blind, is built on implicit ideological representations of femaleand male migrants. These representations in turn have an impact on the approach to equal treatment, as demonstrated through an analysis of European legislation on immigration and asylum.
