This study concerns the extent, boundaries and dating of the central east or Byzacium cadaster in Africa Proconsularis in the vicinity of Hadrumetum. The first part examines the limits of this cadaster, the traces of centuriations in this space thus defined, and discusses the motivation behind and the date of this operation. The second part addresses the very delicate question of ownership and possession of the land in this part of the provincial domain: To whom did these territories belong before the conquest? What did they become under the Republic and the beginning of Principate? What was their relationship with Hadrumetum? The last part examines the future of the region under Empire, suggesting that the development of Hadrumetum and its promotion to the rank of colony would have in a way ‘stifled’ a number of other cities that were previously important.
