ʻThe economy of the animal creationʼ : William Bartram et le partage de la nature dans les colonies du sud-est américain

Abstract

This paper examines Travels (short title), botanist William Bartram’s only book, published in 1791. It argues that Bartram’s vision of sharing nature in the American colonies of the Southeast is original. Departing from a purely dualistic view of nature, Bartram indeed adopts a holistic viewpoint which in turn seems to evolve towards what would be called today environmental ethics.
