This introduction discusses each element of the central theme of this special issue “mapping / uncertain / knowledge.” It claims a place for uncertainty in (between) histories of knowledge and ignorance. Moreover, this introduction argues the value of including maps in these histories. The history of knowledge and the history of maps and mappings not only share many characteristics; they can and should fruitfully inspire each other.
