Urban renovation through slum relocation in San Miguel de Tucumán. The cases of Villa Piolín and El Triangulito
Abstract
The role of the state as our cities’ growth and development regulator is fundamental to correct imbalances produced by the real estate market. In that regard, public policies fulfill a crucial purpose as they are used either to solve urban problems or to worsen them further. Two relocations from the Programa Federal de Urbanización de Villas y Asentamientos Precarios (Slum Urbanization Federal Program) in the metropolitan area of Tucumán, carried out by the Instituto Provincial de la Vivienda (Provincial Housing Institute) and San Miguel de Tucumán’s municipality are analyzed in this article. Through a diachronic analysis of land uses, the development of both urban interventions is evaluated to determine who were the beneficiaries of that operation.
