Modeling of ice accretion on a non-rotating cylinder
Abstract
A time-dependent numerical model is developed for the description of icing on an unheated, non-rotating cylinder in supercooled water clouds. The model predicts, with consideration of the effect of roughness and shape, the mass and profile of ice accretion as a function of time. Simulations of atmospheric icing on cylinders under natural conditions comprise rime and glaze formation. A comparison of the model calculation with experimental measurements indicates a good agreement. The model is applicable to a variety of geometric structures, such as wires and cables.
