The article briefly discusses the history of Countryside Education with emphasis on social struggles for its conquest, with the concern of thinking about the importance, necessity and challenges of continuing education of primary school teachers as public policy. Problematizing this reality through the dialogue with different authors of the subject, with the specific legislation, as well as through our social and professional experience in the accomplishment of improvement courses for professionals of basic education, offered by the Secretaria de Educação Continuada, Alfabetização, Diversidade e Inclusão (Secadi) of the Ministério da Educação (MEC) through the federal universities.
