Abstract
Earthquakes are devastating phenomena that affect regions around the world. When they do occur, the media plays a crucial role in informing the public about the extent of the damage, loss of life, and relief efforts. However, how events are referred to in the media can impact public perception and understanding. In this article, we focus on how Le Monde and Le Point, two influential French newspapers, addressed the earthquakes in Italy and Nepal. This article examines how two renowned French newspapers named and covered the earthquakes that struck Italy and Nepal. By analysing the articles published by these journals, we aim to explore the linguistic choices and naming strategies used to report on these natural disasters. The objective is to better understand how the French written press presents and relates to such important events and to examine the implications of these naming choices on public perception. In times of crisis, the choice of words and the way events are designated in the media are critical in shaping public opinion and emotions. The use of specific terms can evoke different images and feelings, influencing readers' interpretations and responses. Therefore, it is essential to examine how Le Monde and Le Point approached the naming of these earthquakes to gain insights into the media's role in framing such events.
