RHETORICAL QUESTIONS AS A WAY OF REALIZING PERSUASIVE STRATEGY IN COURT DISCOURSE

Abstract

Purpose. The article is devoted to the study of linguistic means in realizing communicative intentions within cognitive and discourse paradigm that explains importance of this research. The author aims to study the realization of persuasive strategy with the help of syntactic means in persuasive communication within court discourse by the example of closing arguments for defense in the court. Methodology. The research is based on the method of pragmatic and semantic text analysis, using methods of contextual and statistical analyses. Results. The results of the study are that rhetorical questions as indirect speech acts may do necessary perlocutionary effect in particular communicative situation. The author supposes rhetorical questions to be effective linguistic means in realizing persuasive strategy. Practical implications. The results of the study can be applied in the sphere of linguistic studies of speech persuasion, and in professional activity of lawyers in order to improve professional speech competence.
