Healthcare in the cities of the Ufa Province (second half of the 19th century)

Abstract

In 1870 a city reform was carried out in Russia. In the article analysis the healthcare system has been conducted based on the data obtained from the documents of the municipalities of the Ufa Province cities. The following problems are considered: sanitary condition of cities, risk factors for public health, measures to prevent epidemics, the organization of hospitals and recruiting medical personnel. In addition, an important point of this study is the analysis of the population’s attitude to scientific medicine, healthcare personnel, and hospitals. The author concludes that the quality of citizens’ life to a great extent depended on their mentality; ignoring sanitary rules caused spread of infections in cities.
