The article is devoted to the problem of determination of the development of high schools for girls in Sumy region in the second half of 19th – beginning of 20th centuries. It has been defined that rapid development of industry, social and cultural reforming in the region led to the necessity of increased number of educated citizens, including women. The dynamic process of the foundation of female high schools has been elicited: during 1870–1914 there were 13 schools of this type. The equipment of state schools was insufficient. But due to the community and sponsors main needs of these establishments were provided. It has been found out that the main aim of educational and studying process at high schools girls of the region was to bring up the qualities of a housewife, mother, wife, what confirm conservative status of female's high school education. However, the certificate of a tutor or mentor gave the opportunity to work at pedagogical sphere. It was a progressive phenomenon at that period, which expands women's opportunity for self-realization in modern social life.
