“Their own mother”: lights and shadows on a case of journalistic coverage of violence against children

Abstract

This paper aims to understand the gestures made by journalismwhen it faces situations of violence against children and adolescents intheir domestic group. We observe how the news account deals with theconclusion that family can be a privileged space for offenses, in spite of socialrepresentations of the familiar nucleus as a place for protection. In order tocontribute to those reflections, we develop the analysis of some news about apossible case of violence against children carried out by their own mother, at thecity of Sete Lagoas, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.
