The problem of lifelong learning and guidance, as well as that of laicity, are of great interest and topicality today. While the former is connected to the need to valorise personal interests, aptitudes and potential of autonomous learning in order to face the continuous changes in the organisation of work and culture brought about by ICT (information and communication technology), laicity is the necessary condition to guarantee a democratic future, a context in which lifelong learning and guidance can come about freely. The Faculty of Education of «Roma Tre» University held two internationally important conferences on these two problems in October 2012. The article illustrates the main lines of the current debate on these themes with reference to the reflections which emerged in the conferences. One conference was entitled «Lifelong Learning and Guidance. A challenge for University Higher Education» («Orientamento e apprendimento lungo il corso della vita. Una sfida per la formazione superiore universitaria»), while the other «Political and Philosophical Laicity and the Exercising of Free Thought: A Tradition Fallen into Disuse? A comparison of Belgium and Italy» («Laicità politica e filosofica ed esercizio del libero pensiero: una tradizione caduta in disuso? Confronto tra Italia e Belgio»).
