Les régimes de visibilité du recensement des favelas de Rio de Janeiro (1950)

Abstract

This article analyzes the implementation of the 1950 census of the favelas by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), as well as the visibility regimes of the statistics produced. It focuses on the choices made by Alberto Passos Guimarães in favor of the construction of a cartographic visualization of the favelas and on the work of the professional photographer Mozart Alves da Silva, especially his photographic reportage illustrating the publication of the census results in the journal O Observador Econômico e Financeiro.
