Since the Middle Ages, houses and sites of the monarchy played an important functional and representative role. However, this role changed substantially, from a cumulative and patrimonial concept of properties to an integrated or systemic one. The change had two fundamental milestones. The first coincided with the reign of Charles V and was manifested in the new organization of the royal works. The second, more decisive, came from the hand of Philip II and transcended that first objective to organize the Sites themselves. This paper analyzes this evolution through the causes and internal order of the new system, paying attention to the effects of this process in the cases of León and Valladolid.
