Spherical explosive crystals refer to explosives with a spherical morphology. Compared to polyhedral explosive crystals, spherical explosive crystals do not have sharp edges or corners, and have a lower probability of generating hot spots due to the edges and corners when subjected to friction and impact. Therefore, spherical explosive crystals have lower mechanical sensitivity and better safety. Moreover, the spherical morphology can endow explosive crystals with more excellent thermal properties, charging performance, energy output, and mechanical properties. Due to the significant improvement of the comprehensive performance of explosive crystals through crystal spheroidization, the research on explosive crystal spheroidization has received high attention from countries around the world. However, there are currently few review articles on the study of spheroidization of explosive crystals. In order to help people better carry out the research on spheroidization of explosive crystals, this article summarizes the current methods for preparing and characterizing spherical explosive crystals based on a systematic investigation of the spheroidization mechanism of explosive crystals, moreover analyzes the process characteristics and spheroidization effects. Finally, based on the current challenges in the study of spheroidization of explosive crystals, the development of spheroidization of explosive crystals is prospected, hoping to provide positive references for the preparation and application of spherical explosive crystals.
