This work aims to explain and classify Giulio Cesare Croce’s techniques and methods of quotation from Orlando furioso in Diporto piacevole, overo ridutto di recreazione, nel quale, si narra cento avvenimenti graziosi, occorsi a varie persone. Conchiusi et accordati con i fini di cento stanze del Furioso. First published in Bologna in 1597, this latter text was printed again, rather successfully, during the seventeenth century. By examining the various quotations – paremic, apodictic or realistic – , this essay will endeavour to offer some reflections on how Croce quotes Orlando Furioso. As it will be clear, Croce’s quotations are not always consistent with the poetic and ideological premises of the source.
