SISTEMA ESPECIALISTA PARA GERAÇÃO DE MAPAS TEMÁTICOS

Abstract

This paper presents a prototype of the thematic mapping module of a software system for Municipal Master Plan design. Because this system is designed for permitting urban planners, system's users, to develop every task in a Municipal Master Plan, the users can produce thematic maps. Since the users are not cartographers and, consequently, may not know the fundamentals of map design, the system has to provide them with tools for making maps in accordance with the principles of thematic map design. Providing users with these kind of tools demands that a level of knowledge about map design be embedded in the software. A level of knowledge means to automate some of the thematic mapping decisions. Then, the thematic mapping module has characteristics of an expert system. The level of knowledge was accomplished by interfaces design and conceptual model, and it was implemented in the module prototype. The system development was based on software engineering concepts, and object oriented methodology. The results of the interfaces design and the prototype implementation for the thematic mapping module are described in this paper. The prototype was implemented using Visual C++ software in a PC environment, with a configuration of Pentium 200MHz, 32 MB RAM and 2,1 GB hard disk.
