Divorce was first applied in Spain in 1932 amongst a series of policies intended to secularise society and delve into citizens’ rights, focusing especially on women and their role within the family. In this article we will approach the application of the law in a specific context, the Castilian province of Valladolid, through the study of claims for divorce filed from 1932 and 1937, by observing how the religious differences or heterodox sexual practices – in opinion of the Catholic Church- emerge in relationships. Finally, we will analyse the models of gender, particularly with regard to women, put forward by lawyers in their claims.
