This documentary review studies scientific research on continuous thermodynamics applications in phase equilibrium calculations of complex mixtures with the purpose of comparing and establishing relations between the types of complex mixture, distribution function, and distributed variable used, which are the main variables of this research. It thoroughly covers relevant work from the inception of this technique until today. These applications in phase equilibrium of petroleum fractions prevail over all those of other systems, being the vapor-liquid equilibrium ones the most widely studied, although there are some relevant contributions in solid-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibria. The use of algebraic distribution functions of a single variable is more frequent, and the most used function is the gamma. This has been used in the characterization of diverse systems with different distributed variables, such as molecular weight, boiling point and number of carbon atoms.
