Some inscriptions show how ethnic units are present and play a part in military operations within the Mauretanian provinces. They allow to follow the progressive integration into the Roman defense system from the Ist to the IVth century. Moreover, they reveal the intricacy of the relations between Romans and gentes: the tribal auxilia recruited from provincial gentes must sometimes be brought in against rebels of these same gentes.
