This article focuses on the articulation of social factors that contribute to the emergence and especially the maintenance of situations of intimate partner violence. The life courses analyzed invite us to consider domestic violence within a continuum of gender-based violence. Age and age gap between partners, activity status, parenthood, disability or poor health, adversity during childhood or adolescence, are all dimensions to be taken into account when analyzing the life courses of these women confronted with intimate partner violence. This article also highlights the obvious absence of institutional support in the recovery process. It is through their own resources (activity, meetings with support figures, ensuring the safety of children), supported by members of their entourage and/or health professionals that women manage to get out of violence, not thanks to a judicial or social sanction of perpetrators.
