Red blood cell storage lesion: a progress review
Abstract
Red blood cells are the main mediators of oxygen transportation in the body. Under normal conditions, the life span of red blood cells circulating in the human body is approximately 120 days. However, after blood donation, erythrocytes in the storage process will eventually induce the occurrence of storage injury due to the accumulation or consumption of metabolites. This review presents a summary of recent research on the mechanism of red blood cell storage lesion, its potential clinical effects and corresponding strategies as follows.
