P. A. Khramov’s Coenobite in the Context of Regional and Russian Classical Literature
Abstract
The article studies a novel by a Ufa writer of the second half of the 20th century P. A. Khramov Coenobite (2008) as one of the best “returned” works of the contemporary Russian-language literature of Bashkortostan. Characterized in the biographical, historical, and regional aspects, this novel is also described in the context of Russian classical literature; its axiological terms are fundamentally important to the author. Its place of creation is evident in it, the culture-specific features of Ufa help distinguish the ethno-cultural and national peculiarities of the geo-panorama and geo-poetics. Owing to the author’s commentary, the “regional” existence pattern is expanded and acquires a nationwide character. On this basis, the regional dimension of the artistic property of Coenobite is complemented by its analysis and evaluation in the context of the whole Russian literature. In this respect it is deeply rooted in the traditions of national literature, which is associated, firstly, with the image of the Russian people and intelligentsia, and, secondly, with the development of methods of autobiographical narrative. As a phenomenon of “Christian realism” this novel is associated with works by A. S. Pushkin, S. T. Aksakov, F. M. Dostoyevsky, B. K. Zaitsev, I. S. Shmelev, and other classical writers, which is demonstrated as a result of a comprehensive analysis of its key part, which presents the system of characters, narrative points of view, allusions and reminiscences crucial for the whole novel.
