MONTHLY AND SEASONAL VARIATION OF SOME POLLUTION PARAMETERS OF BÜYÜK MENDERES RIVER

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine dimension of the pollution of Büyük Menderes river on monthly and seasonal basis. Water samples were collected throughout a year from 13 different points and every 40 km of river and were analysed for some physical and chemical parameters, trace elements and heavy metals, nitrogen fractions and total phosphorus. Results belong to the river waters varied by month by, but some sample points showed high pollution levels for different parameters in almost all months. Industrial and domestic waste waters in its environment discharged into Büyük Menderes river and it could not tolerate this pollution load in a near future. For this reason, Büyük Menderes river which was not yet pollution by heavy metals but contains the high levels of N, P and total salts can be regained by taking simple purification and discharge methods.
