Abstract

In these Autobiographical fragments Mahmoud Bayrem Ettounsi takes a stern look at Orientals in France, allowing no concessions. He is the first to provide a portrait of the Oriental “rastaquouere”, who is the archetype of the Oriental himself. The portrait of the Oriental here involves an attack against his identity, a test, which is constitutive of being. As depicted by Bayrem Ettounsi, the West represents a model to follow.
