Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), as a member of prostaglandin E, belongs to eicosanoids. It participates in inflammatory reaction and immune regulation. Under normal physiological conditions, intestinal mucosa undergoes persistent self-renewal. This process is mediated by intestinal stem cells (ISC), which reside in the base of intestinal crypts. ISC play a very important role in maintaining the integrity of intestinal mucosa. Along with in-depth study of the role of PGE2 in adult stem cells (including ISC), PGE2 has been proven to not only participate in inflammatory reaction, but also promote the proliferation of adult stem cells by activating the Wnt signaling pathway, thereby properly maintaining normal intestinal tissue renewal. In this article, the role of PGE2 in the repair of intestinal mucosal injury and the effect upon ISC were mainly reviewed.
