In this study, a versatile Ottoman scholar Birgivī Mehmed Efendī's (d. 981/1573) life, works, scientific personality and education is aimed to examine the formal and informal context. In this context, Birgivī’s understanding of education; and its contribution to education and social developments in this direction has been discussed and education approach, methods and principles have been put forward within this framework. In the study, literature scanning and document analysis methods were used by adopting a screening model. In this context, related sources were searched, the works related to Birgivī Mehmed Efendī and the findings of similar studies were used. The obtained documents and findings were classified under certain themes within the framework of the problem, aim and method of the study as a result of document analysis and evaluated in the light of literature. According to the findings; Birgivī Mehmed Efendī comes to the forefront with his scientific personality and his uncompromising structure, which looks critically at the center of the world of thought / meaning. He had an impact on society with his professorship in formal education, his sermons in non-formal education, and his scientific personality, educatorship, principles, critical approach and debates. With the pedagogical and andragogical approach, he aimed to educate students in madrasahs and public education in mosques. Teaching, royalty and guidance activities has been functionally effective on society. He was opposed to superstition and adopted a critical approach in education. He did not remain insensitive to religious and social problems, he made efforts to realize a mentality transformation in society with his words-behavioral harmony, scientifically based ideas and works that will be understood by all segments of society. The Qur'an is obligatory and the Prophet adopted “emr-i bi’l-ma’rūf ve nehy-i ani’l-münker ”and based on the principle of “moderation” never abandoned educational activities until the end of his life. It can be said that Birgivī is an idealist educator who has become an internationally influential world with his works still being taught in different countries of the world.
