The occurrence of a vacillation solution with a period of approximately 10 days in a simple baroclinic climate model has been described. A special meridional form of the zonally symmetric heating source described by the mode (3,0), stationary orographic longitude dependent forcing and an energy exchange between the zonally symmetric state and the long wave due to barotropic and baroclinic components are necessary conditions for the development of free Rossby waves due to a nonlinear instability process if the synoptic waves of the model are switched off.
