About the Phenomenon of Growing Popularity of the European Green Party
Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the process of formation of the «European Green Party» (EGP) on the basis of environmental («Greens») parties and organizations in Europe, which began in the 1990’s of the twentieth century. It is shown that, starting with the discussion of environmental issues, these parties gradually moved in their program documents to address the more General problems of modern industrial society. It is noted that the EGP party has received support among the youth, which creates good prospects for its future. In the end, the EGP united the majority of environmental parties from EU member States. The article analyzes the results of the partici- pation of the EGP in the elections of MEPs since 2004, which demonstrate a constant increase in its popularity among the voters of the EU member States. The geographical representation of this party is constantly growing. the green parties have their deputies in many national parliaments of the EU member States. Today, this party is the fourth political force in the European Union after the con- servatives of the European people's party, the center-lefts of the Party of European Socialists, and the Liberal and Democrats of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats of Europe (ALDE).
