The seventieth anniversary of the undoubted leader in the organization of the sciences of criminal law, penal law and criminology, Doctor of Law, Professor, Head of the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Vladimir Sergeevich Komissarov, who lived a bright life and did a lot for the doctrine, is a good opportunity to remember this outstanding man and to discuss the role of personality in science, focusing on the mandatory components of the leader’s personality and on the tasks of the doctrine at the present time. In the criminal law science, the topic of the scientist’s personality has not been practically studied, and the problem of the main tasks of the doctrine is highly relevant, taking into account the changing socio-political realities. Purpose: on the example of Professor V.S. Commissarov, to verify by sociological research of a highly qualified professional audience, whether the scientist’s personality plays a role in the organization of science and in the development of the doctrine itself, to find out what qualities a leader in science should possess, as well as to determine what challenges the science of criminal law and criminology face today. Methods: dialectical, sociological (survey), analysis, synthesis. Results: the study demonstrates that leadership in science, including in criminal law, penal law and criminology, is essential for its effective functioning. The departure of the organizing personality or the leader’s departure from the functions of the organizer of science affects the development of scientific communications in the most negative way. The basis of personality in science in general and in the organization of science in particular, including in the sciences of the criminal cycle, is a set of qualities, including professional, communicative and personal qualities. The role of the scientist’s personality is most significant in the organization and development of scientific communications, scientific education of pupils and followers, formation of doctrinal knowledge. In many ways, it determines the major challenges facing science.
