As historians, historical fiction teaches us what we understand about our past as a society. The French Revolution (1789-1799) is a pivotal period, which is told as much by specialists as by passionate artists and designers. The reception and understanding of the revolutionary era is thus influenced by alternative narratives that escape academic history. This article seeks to present and deconstruct the new mythologies circulating in moving images, cinema, television and video games.
