This study is part of the Research Line 1: Training, knowledge and professional development of the Graduate Program in Educati on of UFSM. The work presented aimed at knowing the reality of a substi tute teacher in the Federal Insti tuti ons of Higher Educati on in Southern Brazil, examining the possible contributi ons to the quality of teaching. The methodological approach used for this study was quanti tati ve and qualitati ve, considering that its use has enabled the development of diff erent strategies for data analysis, whether based on principles of narrati ve analysis, either in stati sti cal procedures. Parti cipated in the fi rst stage all substi tute teachers employed during the years 2006 to 2008 of the federal Higher Educati on Insti tuti ons in Southern Brazil and the second, 45 teachers distributed within 6 insti tuti ons surveyed. From the foregoing analysis, there was a general observati on: these teachers are being built as teachers in relati onal dynamics, being able to produce knowledge, within relati onships, oft en tense, constructed within insti tuti ons. In short, the substi tute teacher, is constructed as a teacher from this experience and the basis for this constructi on is not only intellectually but also from his life story, consisti ng of emoti onal, aff ecti ve, personal and interpersonal. Thus, it is beyond the vision teacher / object, because it is not just a guy who is put into an insti tuti on with a strict relati onship of knowledge, informati on processing and "passes" to their students.
