ABSTRACT: In the current studies devoted to standardization, the Norwegian language is always presented as a special case. From a meta-historiographical approach, my article analyses the international literature focused on the history of the Norwegian language in order to highlight its main vectors. This article leads also to the general discussion of the epistemological foundations of the history of languages and sociolinguistics (mainly the standardization), and the relations between both disciplines. This discussion is based on the contributions to this topic coming from the current Swiss school of Historical Sociolinguistics and from a new approach to Einar Haugen and the origins of the sociolinguistics.
