The paper presents the similarities and differences between the Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) and Slovenia during the period of gaining their independence and of democratization at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s. In order to better understand the circumstances, the paper also reaches somewhat back into history and briefly indicates the differences and similarities between the Baltic States and Slovenia at the occurrence of major events of the 20th century. There are many similarities between the compared parties, but there were also important differences, which are evident in the Baltic States particularly from their experience of about 20 years of total independence in the interwar period, while Slovenia had practically no such experience until 1991/92: until 1990 it mostly aimed at becoming as independent as possible within the Yugoslav country.
