This article presents the results of a survey of the changes in the profile and practice of the school manager in the face of the recent conjunctural perspectives that contribute to the emergence of new concepts in education. Through a journey back in time, an analysis is made of the different approaches that have influenced management in general, and school management in particular, drawing on the classic works of authors such as Taylor, Fayol and Mayo. The cultural, political and socioeconomic changes that have been taking place in society over the past few years have repercussions for school organization and raise concepts such as democracy, participation, and the decentralization of power. In order to investigate the current situation, a study was made by means of interviews with twenty directors working in the school system of Recife, Pernambuco, with the aim of elucidating their views on education, school management and democracy from the perspective of the ongoing confrontation between theory and daily practice. Frente às recentes perspectivas conjunturais que vêm contribuindo para a construção de novos conceitos em educação, apresentamos resultados de pesquisa realizada sobre a mudança do perfil e da prática do administrador escolar.
