Risk of occupational accident related to care for hospitalized people with hiv/aids, in florianópolis-sc-brazil (1986-2006)

Doi: 10.5902/2179769212536 Objective: to understand the situations of risk of occupational accidents related to the care for hospitalized people with HIV/AIDS, in a reference hospital for infectious diseases in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, in the period of 1986-2006. Method: socio-historical research using oral history for data collection with 20 health workers. A content analysis was also carried out. Results: the results showed the noncompliance with the biosecurity measures, characterized by resistance to the use of Personal Protective Equipment, recapping of contaminated needles, improper disposal of sharp tools, hurry and unrest of the work. In addition, overload of work, lack of human resources, aggressiveness, severity of patients admitted at the beginning of the epidemic. Final Thoughts: it was necessary for managers, the institution and the health professionals to work on (re)planning the strategies in order to prevent accidents and promote health and worker safety in their work activities.
