The present study aimed to assess the characteristics of research groups of theBrazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development specialized in patient safetyin health and nursingfields. Documentary, descriptive exploratory study of quantitative approach carried out through access to all Brazilian research groups registered at the CNPq Research Groups Directory.Data collection occurred in December 2015; data were stored in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet®and analysis resulted in the identification of 22 research groups. Mobilization and search for knowledge combined with care practice, teaching and research are essential to develop actions that improve the healthcare system at the national level, with the primary objective of ensuring patient safety.
