Successful surgical treatment of penetrating brain gunshot wound with venous sinus damage
Abstract
These are 7 observations of penetrating gunshot brain wounds with damage to venous sinuses sustained were described. Superior sagittal sinus injuries were most frequent (6 cases). Straight (tentorial) sinus injury occurred in one case. Damage to one or even two sinus walls was observed in 5 cases, 2 cases showed transverse sinus injury which caused its occlusion. Sinus occlusion and the effectiveness of collateral circulation were identified with angiography. A detailed description of diagnostic and treatment strategies was presented.Venous sinus injuries occur in 14.6% of gunshot brain wounds. Surgical intervention in case of gunshot sinus injuries is performed by a neurosurgeon as part of specialized medical care after a spiral brain CT scan. The surgery shall be combined with a full range of measures for blood loss compensation. All patients with cerebral venous sinus injuries were discharged from the hospital with improvements.
