Un recorrido iconoglífico por las antiguas representaciones del tamal en la Mesoamérica maya de Tierras Bajas

Abstract

Resumen: En el presente texto se ofrece un recorrido histórico milenario por las representaciones, tanto visuales o iconográficas, como epigráficas o escriturarias, de uno de los alimentos -al parecer- más antiguos, preciados y generalizados entre los pueblos mayas desde épocas tempranas. Como tal, la hoja de ruta de este recorrido en torno a las representaciones del tamal en el mundo maya -de sobre todo Tierras Bajas- inicia por las célebres pinturas murales del sitio de San Bartolo (ca. s. i a.e.c) y la subestructura I-4 de Chiik Nahb de Calakmul (ca. 650-700 e.c.); prosigue con algunos otros indicadores arqueológicos y evidencias iconográficas y epigráficas atestiguadas en los vasos cerámicos del Clásico tardío; y concluye con algunas cuantas tapas de bóveda procedentes de la región Chenes, y algunas otras inscripciones de Chichén Itzá hacia el periodo Clásico terminal (800- 1000 e.c.). Abstract: This essay takes a millenary historical journey through representations, both visual or iconographic, as well as epigraphic or written, of one of the most ancient, prized, and generalized foods among the Maya peoples since early times. As such, the road map of this tour around the representations of tamales in the Maya world -especially in the Lowlandsbegins with the famous mural paintings of the site of San Bartolo (ca. 1st century B.C.E.) and the substructure I-4 of Chiik Nahb of Calakmul (ca. 650-700 C.E.); and continues with some other indicators of tamales in the Maya world. We find some other archaeological indicators and iconographic and epigraphic evidence on Late Classic ceramic vessels, and vault lids from the Chenes region, and some other inscriptions from Chichén Itzá towards the Terminal Classic period (800-1000 C.E.).
