Representation of the local in Montien Boonma’s mixed media
Abstract
Research article titled Montien Boonma: Representation of the Local aims to study the mixed-media art of the artist was studied. It focuses on the life and works of the artist, who pioneeredthe mixed-media art acclaimed both nationally and internationally. The study includes life background and development of the artist’s works, which are also representation of the local affected by globalization. The result found the artist uses his experience to reflect personal attitudes towards nature and society’s transformation, influenced by tense contradiction of the rural society transformed into industrial capitalist one. Analyzing the late diligent effort he spent to works and life drawn from local craftworks, also religious places and form, does not only express thought process that help to heal his doubt and suspicious, but also insists that the medium or material he used were also related to his economic condition. This implies that his work of art and the late creator’s life are closely knitted to represent the local beliefs, without impinging to national elite art.
