Among all the mobilities that the First World War engendered, the returns of Italians to Italy at the outbreak of the conflict were particularly significant: 470,000 Italians returned to their native country in a few months. These unexpected and hasty movements were made possible by the crucial support of various public and private institutions, including the Opera Bonomelli. This association, which had been established a few years earlier, was operating in a large number of emigration countries and in Italy. It played a primary role in the repatriation of Italian migrants to their homeland, assisting them until the Italian mobilization in the spring of 1915
