The specific perception of films through the prism of historical and cultural studies (with examples based on Kira Muratova’s first features). When one studies the Soviet cinema, it appears that many texts on the subject (and especially on films of the sixties and the seventies) published in the West, are not written by researchers in film studies, but rather in historical or cultural studies. Through the analysis of the texts published about the first two films by Kira Muratova, we can specify these approaches. The historical take on cinema considers the film in a chain of events (project, script, censorship, production, shooting, editing, distribution) and a symptom of a hisorical period. The cultural approach studies the film as a cultural manifestation or a cultural object in a given sociocultural context. In our conclusion, we discuss the possibility to merge these approaches with a specifically cinematographic study of films.
