Briceida Cuevas Cob: una poética en tensión

Abstract

In this article we study the tension that exists in the poetry of Briceida Cuevas Cob from its status as “indigenous literature”. These tensions are manifested in language and culture from an otherness that has been created in order to deny the formation of speakers of native languages in Mexico, such as Mayan. From the analysis and interpretation of three poems from U yok’ol auat pek’ ti kuxtal pek’ / El quejido del perro en su existencia and the poem “Yaan a bin xook / Irás a la escuela” we show diverse elements that propose in their reading a reconsideration of violence against dogs in street situations and against Mayan women. This case study allows us to demonstrate the diversity of approaches to current issues from a particular Mayan cosmovision that is in tension between a subject and his community as well as in the field of national policies of inclusion of the indigenous in the Mexican national panorama. We appeal to an approach based on transcultural criticism that allows a more situated reading of these poems and of much of the literature in native languages that is currently being written.
