Northwestern University Department of Emergency Medicine: Orthopedic Teaching Files (Out of Print)
Abstract
Abstract This website was designed to aid in the evaluation, diagnosis, and emergency department management of a variety of orthopedic complaints seen routinely in the emergency department (ED) setting. Each case involves a question stem followed by an answer which then leads to an expanded look at the background, diagnosis, and ED management of a particular orthopedic disease process. It is meant to be useful for study by medical students, residents, and faculty, and as a quick reference source for patient management during a busy ED shift. Utilized within the home institution's department for learning within the orthopedic curriculum, it has shown to be effective for broadening the knowledge base of orthopedic disease. The site was used as the primary independent learning resource for the emergency medicine residency during its month dedicated to orthopedic teaching. The site was also shown to be effective for quick reference during work to help in diagnosis and patient management, and addressed a perceived void indicated by clinicians who wanted an easily navigable online reference to answer clinical questions during a busy shift.
