This study aims to (1) describe the structure and vitality patterns of the Kaili language in the family domain and (2) describe the factors that cause the helplessness of the Kaili language in the family domain of the Kaili ethnic students. The method used in this research is qualitative and quantitative. Data collection techniques through questionnaires, interviews, and observation as the main data collection tools. Data processing techniques and data analysis were carried out based on data trends regarding the structure and pattern of the use of the Kaili language in the family domain. From the results of the study it is known that the use of the Kaili language among students of the Kaili ethnicity at Tadulako University in the family sphere has burdened their vitality which tends to decrease and indicates extinction. This is because most of them use Indonesian and some use foreign languages. There are several factors that shift the use of the Kaili language to Indonesian and foreign languages, namely; (1) prestige factors, (2) function factors, (3) information and technology factors, and (4) a positive attitude weakens the Kaili language.
