In order to quickly and accurately calculate fault-tolerant capability of multi-phase surface-mount permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) at condition of asymmetrical fault, based on subdomain model, an analytical model for multi-phase SPMSM with asymmetric fault is proposed to calculate magnetic field distribution. Firstly, air-gap flux density, no-load back electromotive force (EMF) and electromagnetic torque are obtained accurately. Then, in order to improve the fault-tolerant capability of multi-phase SPMSM, with the minimum phase current as optimization objective, a fault-tolerant control system under the condition of single-phase winding disconnection is established. The performance of electromagnetic torque and torque ripple are used as evaluation indicators. Finally, taking a 12-phase SPMSM prototype with 44-poles 48-slots as an example, the effectiveness of proposed model is proved by 2D finite element model (FEM) and experiment test.
