Reflections regarding the scenario of death under the palliative perspective

Abstract

Background: This reflective study focuses on the place of death in the palliative perspective; since a person terminally ill will die one day, discuss where this person will receive her final care and die, is a pressing need for Society and the Academy. Aim: Discuss the place of death under the palliative perspective. Method: Reflective study on the subject of death in palliative care, with the use of the original sources available in the scientific literature. Results: To reflect on the scenario of death should be based on Bioethics’ concepts, such as beneficence of the sick person and his autonomy, as well as their clinical status, for better decide which scenario, hospital or home, where the sick person spends his last moments. Conclusions: The team with the sick person and his family must discuss possibilities of offering care and emotional support at home, besides the participation of the staff of Public Health team, even to empower caregivers. Finally considering clinical condition of the sick person, the presence of signs and symptoms that can lead to discomfort or require specialized hospital care and technological resources.
