This paper deals with the linguistic question in Belgium from a historical perspective but without any sociolinguistic pretensions. The aim is to take a quick look at the different periods Belgium has gone through in its history in order to understand the emergence of this small country with multiple borders, both linguistic and political. The great division between the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking communities is not the only one, since a German-speaking community also exists in the East.languages in Belgium, language border, language community, history, Flanders, sociolinguistics
